Creating a Safe Space
“When students feel seen and heard, that is when they begin to flourish, build self-confidence and develop resilience. Counselling is a space without judgment, where students are invited to be themselves and to show their vulnerability. In doing so, they are able to process their emotions, take steps, make decisions and ultimately build a meaningful school and life experience while learning to navigate the social and emotional demands that come their way.
Counselling is a space where there can be tears and laughter, silence and words, self-discovery, acceptance, and commitment. As a school counsellor, it is a privilege to welcome students’ stories, to hear their concerns and to share their silence. Every time I witness the power of what happens in this space, I am reminded again and again why counselling matters.”

My Journey as a Scholarship Student
“My journey as a scholarship student began through the Talent Identification Programme, as I was recruited for the programme from my public school in Maputo. Four of us advanced from my school, and after tests and interviews, only two – Rozy, another student and I – were awarded scholarships.
Joining the Academy transformed my life. Living in the residence taught me independence, discipline and how to embrace diverse cultures. Adapting to an English curriculum was tough, but the teachers and my new friends helped me grow. Every challenge built resilience, from online learning during COVID-19 to leading as a House captain. Today, as a Diploma Programme 2 student, I see how this scholarship shaped my confidence, leadership and purpose to give back to my community.”

Miles Apart, Together at Heart
“Growing up, my grandfather would tell me stories about working at His Late Highness Aga Khan IV’s stud farms in Ireland. When my cousins moved to Kenya and began attending AKA Mombasa, I visited them several times. I always knew I wanted to end up living and working in Africa.
When I decided to move from Ireland, I saw that the Aga Khan Academy Maputo was looking for a visual arts teacher. I was drawn to the Academy due to the fantastic curriculum on offer. The IB promotes pluralism, cultural enrichment and leadership to create a better world for all. The Academy also admits students from different socio-economic backgrounds to be educated in a phenomenal setting, which is very important.
AKA Maputo is a hard-working family – the staff are fantastic and have made me feel like I have always been a part of the team, and the students are incredible, engaging and dedicated.”

Finding Comfort at the Academy
“When choosing a school for our child, we wanted an education that would prepare them for the fast-changing, technology-driven world. It was important that they develop discipline, curiosity and a love for learning across all subjects.
We searched for a joyful, flexible and inspiring environment where learning happens naturally. When we discovered AKA Maputo, we knew it was the right choice.
The IB curriculum offers global exposure and future opportunities, while the diverse teaching staff ensures a balanced experience rooted in both local and international perspectives.
The Academy’s modern, safe campus and its facilities further impressed us. The vision, mission and dedication of the entire AKA Maputo team give us confidence that our child will be valued and educated in the best way possible.”

Finding Home and Purpose
“I still remember the first time I stepped onto AKA Maputo’s campus – my dream had become real. Green spaces stretched endlessly, trees and flowers swayed, and birds sang melodies that seemed to welcome the day. Every corner held discovery: science labs buzzed with curiosity, art studios smelled of paint and possibility, and music rooms resonated with creativity.
What touched me most weren’t the buildings – it was the people. Students and teachers from around the world became a family, united by shared values and a love for learning. Every conversation, every laughter-filled corridor made me feel at home.
The Academy does more than teach; it shapes hearts and minds, guiding us to lead ethically, pursue excellence, and serve with purpose. Here, I didn’t just grow academically – I discovered what it means to be part of something bigger than myself.”
