On 27 July 2024, Prince Rahim Aga Khan and Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan visited the Aga Khan Hostel, Hyderabad and the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad in India, where they were warmly welcomed by students and staff.

Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June highlighting the need to protect and better the planet. This year, the theme revolves around “Generation Restoration” – a collective effort from this generation to restore the Earth around us through the revival of water sources and the replanting of forests. Across the Aga Khan Schools, our students’ projects, innovations and initiatives aim to make a meaningful change to the communities around them. Read more about some of their projects below.

The Aga Khan Academies Student Exchange Programme completed its fifth cycle from 13 January to 29 March, with over 45 students from the Academies in Mombasa, Kenya, Hyderabad, India and Maputo, Mozambique spending one semester abroad on different campuses. 

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa in Kenya celebrated its 20th anniversary on Monday, 19 February in the presence of Princess Zahra Aga Khan. Established in 2003, the Academy in Mombasa was inaugurated by His Highness the Aga Khan, the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), and the former late president of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki. It is the first in an integrated, global network of residential schools known as the Aga Khan Academies, with other campuses located in Hyderabad, India, Maputo, Mozambique and Dhaka, Bangladesh. 

The Global Youth Action Fund (GYAF) is a prestigious award designed to honour students with unique ideas and innovations addressing the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The GYAF is a part of the International Baccalaureate’s Festival of Hope, which was designed to create spaces for young people to come together and speak their truth. The award is open to any student or student group from aged 12 to 19 with an idea they believe will impact the community. Winners of the award receive grant funding, an eight-week online training course on social entrepreneurship and mentorship from current leaders in social entrepreneurship.  

On 8 February, students and staff at the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad met with faculty and staff from Huron University, including President and Vice Chancellor of Huron University Dr Barry Craig, to strengthen the university’s partnership with the Aga Khan Schools (AKS). 

Over 130 students across the Aga Khan Schools participated in an inaugural Model United Nations Conference from 24-25 November 2022.

The Aga Khan Schools held its inaugural Climate and Environment Conference from 28-29 October in which students discussed innovative ways to combat climate change with their peers and global experts. 

Six students from across the Aga Khan Schools received the IB’s Dr Siva Kumari Middle Years Programme (MYP) Student Innovators’ Grant, totalling $14,500, to develop their sustainable projects. 

On 8 September, Diploma Programme students from the Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School, Dar es Salaam, the Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi and the Aga Khan Academies in Hyderabad, Maputo and Mombasa were given a virtual tour of the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada.

The Aga Khan Schools (AKS), an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network that brings together the Aga Khan Education Services and the Aga Khan Academies, is celebrating its Class of 2022 and the impressive results they received in their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) studies this year.

The Aga Khan Academy Dhaka opened its doors for the first time today to its students.

Despite being a cohort that started their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) journey online, the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa’s Class of 2022 has received exceptional results in their IB DP examinations.

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa celebrated 69 exceptional young students at a graduation ceremony on Saturday, 21 May 2022. 

After two years of uncertainty and online and hybrid learning due to the pandemic, the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad held its first in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2022 on Saturday, 21 May 2022.

The Aga Khan Academy Dhaka recently received the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) certification – the first project in Bangladesh to receive this certification – which is awarded to buildings that mitigate the effects of climate change. 

The World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Dr Mercy Tembon visited the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka.

The Aga Khan Academy Maputo was inaugurated today by the President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Jacinto Nyusi together with the President of the Portuguese Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the presence of Prince Rahim Aga Khan, representing His Highness the Aga Khan.

On Friday, 18 March 2022, Prince Rahim Aga Khan visited the Aga Khan Academy Maputo before the Academy’s inauguration the next day.

For their personal projects, students investigate an area of their choosing and interest in order to create a product. Grade 10 student, Arya Abdul, tells us more about her project, “A step forward” in which she built an easily accessible, environmentally friendly walker.

On Wednesday, 8 September 2021, Diploma Programme students from across the Aga Khan Academies virtually toured the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada where they learned about Islamic art and artefacts from various Muslim civilisations.  

In an op-ed piece, Iman Kazani, a Diploma Programme 2 student from the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, shares her findings from her virtual internship with the Aga Khan Development Network on how the Academies teaches its students about the environment and climate change through its curriculum and various initiatives.

As climate change and maintaining our environment are becoming more imperative in our everyday lives, the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa and the Aga Khan Academy Maputo have instituted water preservation efforts for a brighter and greener future.

Established in 2017, the Aga Khan Academy (AKA) Alumni Network initially began with the intention of keeping alumni connected with each other after graduating from their respective Academy. Now, the AKA Alumni Network not only brings alumni together, but it is continuously creating various professional and mentorship programmes for alumni and current students.

In a year filled with unprecedented challenges, the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa’s Class of 2021 succeeded nevertheless, achieving excellent results in their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) studies this year.

The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad’s Class of 2021 achieved the Academy’s best results ever in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), with the cohort achieving an average score of 34.3.

Award-winning and designed to international standards, the Academy in Dhaka will be the fourth in the network of 18 Aga Khan Academies globally and will welcome the first cohort of students in July 2022.

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science from the Aga Khan Academies!

Danish Dhamani, Class of 2013 from the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, used to be afraid of speaking in front of audiences. Now, he's been listed in the Forbes 30 Under 30 2021 list for his public speaking app. 

Amongst 300 participants, Grade 9 student Shashini Bommala from the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad was recognised as the best Junior CEO through an international entrepreneurial course.  

The Aga Khan Academy Maputo has become a member of the Council of International Schools (CIS), a membership community working with international schools to enhance their high-quality education.   

On Thursday 7 January, the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa commenced in-person learning for the Junior School, with Year 1 and Year 4 students being welcomed onto campus. This marks the beginning of a phased reopening process for the school, which had previously held fully online instruction.

Alyssa Jamal is a Year 10 student at the Aga Khan Academy Academy Mombasa whose personal project focuses on creating an affordable wrist splint for underprivileged children with cerebral palsy.

On 15 September 2020, the Junior School community at AKA Mombasa celebrated International Dot Day, which celebrates creativity, courage and collaboration.

Zvikomborero joins AKA Maputo from the AKA Hyderabad where he has led the Humanities Department. He will be supporting and developing the MYP Humanities programme and also support in the preparation for the Diploma Programme. Coming from Zimbabwe, he has a wealth of IB teaching experience across a range of subject areas. 

Following in the footsteps of previous cohorts, the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa’s Class of 2020 received record-breaking results in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) this year. In addition to the Academy once again scoring highly, the percentage of top scorers was also above the global average – with nine students scoring an outstanding 40 points and above. 

During the July break, the Aga Khan Academies and the Aga Khan Development Network partnered up to provide internship opportunities for students in the Diploma Programme. Kauthar Mohamed, the internship coordinator at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa tells us more about the programme.

Undeterred by the challenges posed by the global pandemic, the Academy embraced the 'new norm' and started the new academic year online. After a restful summer, the Academy community returned to online classes to take on the new year in good earnest with not only new tools but also new teachers.

After months of collaboration within the AKDN community, especially between the Aga Khan Education Board India (AKEBI) and the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad, six students from Saurashtra have been selected for admission into Grade 7 at the Academy through our Talent Identification Programme. 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions, the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa and the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad celebrated their Class of 2020 through virtual graduation ceremonies. 

Students at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa produced a captivating film called ‘Log Out’ with support of art & drama teacher Joyce Arigi and English teacher Alex Mwololo who guided the film-making process.

Onboarded remotely, Smita is already working with members of faculty and looking forward to start off the new academic year in August, 2020.

Aiza Fazal, a Junior School student at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa wrote new lyrics to the melody of ‘We are the World’, originally composed by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, in an uplifting rendition to share a message of hope given the current global situation.

Garv Joshi (grade 8) produced his own trap music (a branch of hip-hop music) and started making his own beats. He then sold the beats and used the money he earned to buy items needed to make a COVID-19 kits. 

The Teacher Preparation Programme (TPP) held its 6th graduation on 18 June 2020 in an online ceremony to honour the achievements of eight graduates from Kenya and Mozambique who successfully completed the 18-month programme.

Bindu is also a thought which must be instilled in every individual’s mindset – because Bindu means ‘stop’ or ‘dot’. We aspire to put a stop to damaging stigmas, to period poverty and to ignorance. With a team of passionate students studying at the Academy, we are determined to help make sustainable menstrual hygiene a reality for everyone.

The Class of 2020 at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa started a fundraiser to raise money for the Academy's Talent Identification Programme. 

In the coming academic year Organic farming will be an activity for the residential students. 

On Saturday 23 May, the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa celebrated the graduation of 67 exceptionally talented students from their Class of 2020, at a specially planned ‘virtual graduation ceremony’.

Earlier this month, Prince Rahim Aga Khan and his wife Princess Salwa visited the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, meeting with students, faculty and administrators to learn more about the Academy's initiatives to further incorporate teaching on the environment and climate change into our curriculum.

In preparation for their annual exhibitions, Grade 5 students from the Aga Khan Academies in Hyderabad and Maputo had a virtual conversation discussing the topics and ideas they will be presenting. The students in Hyderabad gave their colleagues in Maputo a closer look into their booths which prompted students to draw similarities and parallels between their work.

His Excellency President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa visited the Aga Khan Academy in Maputo on 13 January, while in Mozambique for the inauguration of its new President. He was accompanied by Ms Teresa Ribeiro, Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Portuguese Government, and Ms Maria Amélia de Paiva, Portugal’s Ambassador to Mozambique.

On Thursday 14 November 2019, the International Exchange Manager for the Aga Khan Academies, Elizabeth MacFarlane, conducted two sessions introducing the Student Exchange Programme, which will now engage Aga Khan Academy Maputo students. Introduced in 2018, the exchange enables Academies’ Year 9 students to study and live at another Academy for three months, from the end of August to the beginning of December.

Music, laughter, food and gifts could be seen and heard as the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa held its 10th annual Zawadi Bazaar on Saturday, 7 December 2019.

The students have had a busy week this week, particularly in Hyderabad. However, they have had the opportunity to have some fun by participating in a Grand Cultural Fest. In Mombasa, the students discuss the residential programme and the different aspects of it.  

This week, students across both Academies have spent time with each other in a social setting. The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa held a cultural night while the students in Hyderabad celebrated Halloween. 

After a busy first half of term, the students have had a well-deserved break. During this time, they were able to visit different parts of their host country. The October break in Hyderabad included a trip to Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu, and the students in Mombasa had the opportunity to go on safari. The students in Mombasa also moved in with host families for part of the break where they could experience day to day life in their host country.  

The student exchange programme is reaching the halfway mark and now the initial settling in period is over, it’s time for the students to dive deeper into their host cultures. This week, both schools took part in endeavours to help the environment to learn more about the local world around them, and sports was also an important feature of the week.

Oliver Baya Wanje, a teacher from the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, has been awarded a scholarship by the International Baccalaureate to complete an M.Ed with the University of the People.  

Highlighting excellence in all aspects of education, State of Texas leaders met with representatives from the Aga Khan Academies, as well as the President of the Ismaili Council for Central USA, and Rizwan Sheikh, member of the Steering Committee for the Texas Agreement of Cooperation in Plano, Texas, on August 21, 2019.

This week we will hear from Isbah and Rayyan in Mombasa, who recount how the Garba night made them feel right at home, whilst learning about different elements of their own culture. We also hear from from Mwanapwani and Gakenia in Hyderabad, who took part in a sports competition against a local school. 

As the Exchange Programme is drawing to a close, students have been able to squeeze in a trip to Watamu near Mombasa.  Amaad Zaidi was impressed with how resourceful you can be with a water bottle. Kaleem and Anis in Hyderabad enjoyed camping and have spent time reflecting on their memories of the Exchange.

In this week's exchange student blog, we hear from Hotep and Shafyna in Hyderabad, who have been particularly fascinated by the natural environment within the AKA Hyderabad campus. In Mombasa, we hear from Ashrith and Sujith, as they share their thoughts on how they enjoyed the enrichment programmes available at their new campus in Mombasa.

Aga Khan Academy Mombasa students were presented the "overall stands exhibit" trophy by President Uhuru Kenyatta earlier this month, at the Mombasa International Show.

Students have already completed the first week of the Exchange Programme at the Aga Khan Academies in Mombasa and Hyderabad. Elizabeth MacFarlane, International Exchange Manager, shares her thoughts on the first week. 

The Aga Khan Academies Student Exchange 2019 is fully underway! Over the next three months, 35 students from the Academies in Mombasa and Hyderabad will ‘exchange’ places, beginning a journey of self-disovery in a new environment.

AKA Mombasa student Ziyaan Virji is working to help tackle the issue of inadequate access to menstrual health resources around the world, and recently received The Diana Award for his efforts. BBC Africa recently profiled Ziyaan at the Academy in Mombasa. 

His Excellency Governor Hassan Ali Joho of Mombasa and JR Hensley, a NBA agent, met with AKA Mombasa's basketball teams.

While working on his "Personal Project" – an in-depth research-based project – for his International Baccalaureate studies at the Academy, Ziyaan Virji, DP2, was surprised to learn that 500 million girls across the world do not have access to the necessary menstrual health resources they require.

AKA Mombasa awarded the International Baccalaurate Educators Certificate (IBEC) in Teaching and Learning to a team of six teachers a part of the Teacher Preparation Programme. 

Educating Girls in Science (EGIS) has been featured in a newly-launched major research study about the strengthening of life skills in secondary education.

74 students of the Class of 2019 concluded their International Baccalaureate journey at the Academy with a formal evening ceremony on Saturday 25th May, joining a growing legacy of global young leaders, driven by the Academy’s unique curriculum and approach to education.

Numerous internal and external speakers presented various topics at the third TEDxYouth event hosted by the Academy.

Recently, Aga Khan Academy Mombasa student Ziyaan Virji (Class of 2020) and Academy alumnus Sydney Ochieng (Class of 2018), who currently attends Wesleyan University, received $5,000 in seed grants from the Patricelli Center for Social Entrepreneurship for their project, Accessible and Affordable Sanitation for Women (AASW).

In February 2019, 22 students from the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad Senior School participated in the International School of Hyderabad Model United Nations, held at Microsoft Campus, Gachibowli. Eight members of the Academy MUN team had standout performances. Middle and senior school students from several city schools took part in the event.

In October 2018, AKA Hyderabad signed an MoU with the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society for joint initiatives on teacher training and recruiting gifted students for scholarship opportunities.

The two month-long inaugural Aga Khan Academies exchange programme came to a close just before the semester ended in December 2018, allowing for returning students to reflect, relive and readjust.

The Aga Khan Academies are partnering with other institutions to achieve the goal of developing high quality teachers locally. One such partnership is with the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada.

The University of British Columbia, a partner of the Aga Khan Academies, will award an honorary degree to His Highness the Aga Khan on Friday, 19 October.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has published an interview with His Highness the Aga Khan in a special commemorative edition of IB World magazine, celebrating the IB's 50th anniversary. 

Students took the initiative to raise funds for Kerala on their second Super Saturday on 8th September. The event raised ₹5,81,000 which will go toward rebuilding the state.

Academy students had a successful outing at the 2018 Design Championship, coming first among 97 teams.

The Aga Khan Academy Maputo celebrated its fifth anniversary with students and staff during the month of August. 

URS AsiaOne Magazine felicitated the Academy at a ceremony in Mumbai on Monday 10th September 2018, for its contribution to India's economy in the country's 71st year of independence. 

On 4 September 2018, a delegation from the Aga Khan Academies and the Ismaili Council for the United States met with Rolando B. Pablos, Secretary of State for the State of Texas, USA, and with senior leadership from the University of Texas System to discuss areas of mutual interest.

At the International Career and College Counselling conference in Delhi, the AKA Hyderabad counsellor was recognised for her outstanding performance.

The three Aga Khan Academies students who participated in the Ryerson DMZ Basecamp recently returned to their respective schools full of entrepreneurial energy.

16 grade 9 students from AKA Hyderabad will exchange places with counterparts in AKA Mombasa through an inaugural international exchange programme from October - December 2018.

The new Aga Khan Centre was opened today by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales at an inauguration ceremony hosted by His Highness the Aga Khan.

Two professors from the California State University, Northridge (CSUN) arrived at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa for a three-week program designed to provide professional development for the Academy’s teachers and to learn more about the Academy and its teaching methodology. 

The Academy hosted its first TEDx Youth event on Saturday 26th May, with a selection of speakers that included recently graduated Diploma Programme students.
