When can I apply?
Applications begin every academic year, specifically in February and April. However, you may apply all year long, provided there is space.

What financial aid programmes are available?

Are transportation services provided?
We have safe and reliable transportation for our students, with convenient bus stops at Edifício Sua Alteza Aga Khan and Feima in Maputo. Learn more about our transportation services within the fee structure here.

Are meal services provided?
We offer lunch as an optional meal service, providing students with a nutritious and satisfying midday meal to keep them energised for the rest of the day. Learn more about our meal services within the fee structure here.

What uniform are students required to wear?
All students are required to wear a uniform while at the Academy. To learn more about our uniform, click here.

What curriculum will I study?
We offer the IB curriculum, which is enriched with the Aga Khan Curricular Strands for students aged three to 18. See the academic programme page to learn more.

What subjects will I take?

What are the term dates?
August 2025 to June 2026.

Can my child graduate with a bilingual diploma?
Yes, our students can graduate with bilingual diplomas in English and a second language of their choice, which is taught at the Academy. Options for the second language include Portuguese, French, Arabic or Farsi.

My child is new to English – are there beginner courses?
Our English language course is for beginners who have some level of understanding of English, making language learning fun, interactive and effective. Through engaging activities, practical exercises and guidance, students gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking English.

Do students get to study abroad?
The Aga Khan Academies offers a Student Exchange Programme for Grade 9 students at the Academies in Hyderabad, Maputo and Mombasa. The programme offers students with the opportunity to study at another Academy for one term. Learn more here.

What extra academic support is available?
In the Junior School, we have a learning support team focusing on helping students with literacy and numeracy. In the Senior School, students receive support every week from their teachers during a timetabled period or Academic Support (ACSU). We also have a trained psychologist who can help identify any learning barriers and support teachers with strategies for inclusion.

What sports might I learn?
We offer sports including swimming, dance, basketball, soccer, tennis and badminton. Explore our sports facilities.

What other activities might I take?
Our students choose from a selection of creative expression, action and service activities. Many of our activities are student-initiated and may, therefore, change. Recent activities have included:

What off-campus excursions are available?
Off-campus field trips are arranged for all students that correlate with what they are learning within the curriculum. In recent years, students have visited the railway station, a national newspaper office, cultural sites, participated in a beach clean-up and much more.

What Service Learning opportunities are there?
Service Learning plays a significant part in the student experience at the Academies. Our students enrol in initiatives with local organisations, intern with local agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network or create their own sustainable community service projects. Read more here.

How does the residential system work?
Our residential students live in residence buildings separated by gender and grade. However, sports and residential activities are co-ed. We assign all students a dorm parent. Dorm parents are a carefully chosen group of teachers who live in faculty apartments in the residential buildings with the students. They are there to ensure a safe, nurturing and comfortable environment for students. Learn more here.

How often may parents visit?
Parents can visit on the weekends with prior approval from the residential head. During the first month of the academic term, parents are encouraged not to visit, so the students can become comfortable with each other and the residences.

What are the rooms like?
Each residential room has four separate beds with their own study table, cupboard and shoe rack. Students can also decorate their rooms according to their tastes and creative ideas.

Can students visit Maputo?
During the weekends, residential students are provided with opportunities to go on excursions where they visit different sites around Maputo.

What dietary needs are catered for?
Parents are given a form to fill out during enrolment, in which they can indicate their child’s specific dietary needs, if any. A vegetarian option is always available, should the student require. See a typical menu here.

How are religious/spiritual needs met?
Residential students are taken to their place of worship on the weekends and are accompanied by a staff member from the Academy.

How can parents keep in touch with their children if they do not have their own mobile device?
If a child does not have a mobile device, parents can contact them through their child’s dorm parent using a phone number provided to them. We have separate phones for both girls’ and boys’ dorms, in which the faculty member on duty for the day will answer any phone calls received that day. If a student has a phone or laptop of their own, they may use it to communicate with their parent(s); however, they can only be used to do so after school hours.

How can parents connect with their child’s dorm parent?
Parents can connect with their child’s dorm parent through email or phone. Dorm parents also offer in-person or online meetings for parents, if needed.

What happens if there is a medical emergency on campus?
We have a health and wellness centre on campus, which provides first aid and is in close contanct with local hospitals to ensure prompt medical assistance. Whether it is a minor injury or an unexpected emergency, our team is ready to respond quickly and effectively.

Is there security on campus?
Our students’ safety is our top priority. Our campus is protected by a renowned security company, ensuring safety inside and outside the school at all times. Security staff also escort students during excursions, giving parents peace of mind that their children are secure wherever they go.

What university and career guidance will I receive?
We offer an extensive university counselling programme assistance with finding internships, and career guidance. Learn more here.

Students at AKA Maptuo have received admission offers from well-known universities around the world, such as the University of Alberta, the University of Concordia, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and more. We also support our students with applying to scholarship opportunities.

What university connections does the Academy have?
The Aga Khan Schools has numerous university connections to prestigious universities, such as Huron University College, the University of Northern British Columbia, the University of Texas at Dallas and more. Academies' graduates have also benefited from these relationships through exclusive scholarship opportunities.

What is AKDN?
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is a collection of nine non-denominational development agencies operating in various countries within the Global South to improve the living conditions and opportunities for the economically and socially vulnerable. The Network focuses on health, education, culture, rural development, institution-building and the promotion of economic development.
