Primary Years Programme
Six to 10-year-olds at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa learn and play in their dedicated Junior School area. They learn to apply their knowledge to real-world situations, develop independent and collaborative working habits and develop a sense of community.

The Junior School
Our Junior School’s facilities have been designed with the needs of younger children in mind. Alongside the multipurpose classrooms, your child has access to a library, music, art and information technology rooms, a well-equipped playground and large playing fields.
The Junior School playground, equipped with slides, swings and more, is an adventurous and enjoyable space for students to socialise and unwind.
Students have access to a broad range of resources and are encouraged to participate in engaging and challenging extracurricular activities with their peers.
Numerous resources are offered to Junior School students, including an expansive library with tablets equipped with educational programmes and activities.
The Curriculum
Primary students take the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, or IB PYP, which covers their social, physical, cultural and ethical development. Our teachers take an interactive, student-centred approach, helping to create independent, confident and respectful learners.
Your child will gain a strong foundation in English language, mathematics, social studies, science and technology, computing, physical education, music, art and Kiswahili. Throughout their studies, they will cover six transdisciplinary themes:
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organise ourselves
- Sharing the planet
What I Like the Most About Going to School
“What I love most about coming to school is seeing my friends and learning new things with them. I enjoy working in groups because we learn from each other and help one another when something is difficult.
In class, we have been learning about concepts and how to ask deep questions, which I find really interesting. My teachers always support me if I do not understand a new word or idea, and that makes me feel confident. My favourite subject is PSPE because it teaches me how to stay calm and control my body. I also enjoy football, crocheting, dancing and sometimes choir.”
