About the Aga Khan Academies
The Aga Khan Academies develops ethical leaders who work to transform their societies. We select talented children from all backgrounds and give them a rigorous international education, a pluralist cultural experience in an inspiring environment and opportunities to learn through service.
What are the Academies?
The Academies are an integrated, global network of day and residential International Baccalaureate (IB) schools based in Kenya, India, Mozambique and Bangladesh. They are part of the Aga Khan Schools, a global network of 200 schools, eight hostels and more than 100 non-formal education programme centres in 12 countries across East Africa, the Middle East and South and Central Asia.
The Academies accept exceptional students aged three to 18, offering financial assistance where needed. Local and international students follow the IB curriculum as part of their holistic education. Whether a day or residential student, they live and learn with others from a variety of backgrounds, developing as ethical leaders in world-standard surroundings.
Investing in Teachers
The Academies aim to contribute to national education priorities through their Professional Development Centres. These provide learning opportunities for both Academy staff and local, external participants. Working with educational departments and schools, we design hands-on programmes such as:
-
English language refreshers
-
Subject-specific knowledge
-
Leadership capability
-
Skills for effective teaching
Our Centre experts then bring their learning to each participant’s classroom by observing and assisting. This builds professional competence and embeds good practice in teaching.
Residential Life
“In the residences we meet people from different places, learn new skills and build strong relationships. I’ve been in the residential programme for a year and it’s been a great, memorable experience.
Our day begins at 6 am with morning exercise and breakfast. Lessons run from 7:45 am to 2:35 pm with breaks for snacks and lunch. After school we study for about an hour and 15 minutes, then have two hours to talk with family, play sport or relax before dinner. We study again for three hours after dinner, have a snack and lights go out at 10:15 pm. On the weekends we enjoy excursions to beaches, water parks and cultural sites. We also visit our places of worship on Fridays and weekends accompanied by a teacher.”

Raising Environmental Awareness
“The lack of environmentally conscious systems in our society inspired a classmate and me to create iSEAyou, a service project promoting ecological and economic sustainability in our communities.
For over a year, our team of 28 students raised environmental awareness through social media challenges, encouraging students to make useful products from recyclable materials. We also developed an educational tool promoting eco-friendly farming for our region. Inspired by the Academy’s vision and our teachers, we’ve built adaptability, creativity and critical thinking, focusing on long-term climate solutions.”

Meet more of our studentsSharing Knowledge
“Through the Academy’s Professional Learning for Educators Series, I have worked with teachers from government schools across Telangana. It has been inspiring to see their enthusiasm and collaboration in strengthening pedagogical skills.
Although lesson planning remains a common challenge, I have observed clear improvements in the quality of plans during school visits after each training. Their confidence has grown, supported by stronger English skills. They now show a better understanding of classroom management, teacher and learner roles and inclusive practices.
Witnessing their growth into confident professionals has been deeply rewarding and helps us better address student needs to ensure continuity of education.”
