Grades 7-10 celebrated Science Day in February 2017 through quizzes, debates, experiments and designing sustainable homes and villages.

Students participated in debates centred on their understanding of scientific concepts and global issues, sharing ideas through which they could discuss and better grasp the strengths and limitations of science. Through research and observation, the MYP science curriculum fosters critical and creative thinking, as well as the identification of assumptions and alternative explanations.

New solutions and ideas to overturn the extensive damage continuously being inflicted on our environment were thrashed out, and waste materials were used to design models of sustainable villages keeping in mind waste management and energy creation and conservation. The IB MYP sciences framework encourages the investigation of real examples of science application, simultaneously allowing for the discovery of tensions and dependencies between science and morality, ethics, culture, economics, politics, and the environment. The quiz was conducted using visual aids and students were challenged with identifying great scientists and providing reasons for scientific observations. MYP students explored living and non-living things, and attempted to comprehend the nature of plants, their behaviours, sustenance and resilience.

Inquiry-based chemistry experiments were collaboratively conducted by student groups, bringing to life American physicist and electric engineer John Bardeen’s adage that the combined results of several people working together is often much more effective than could be that of an individual scientist working alone.
